SONGS: Newland Street

Q: What was the inspiration for the song - Anna! Oh your eyes.

My song, Newland Street was written on the way to work. It was an exercise in trying to be mind-ful. I was really trying to be aware of the thoughts and feelings that were coming up as I was doing the normal routine stuff - like catching the bus or whatever. As I was capturing those moments, some pretty heavy thoughts and feelings came along with them.
What I take away from the song now - after it existing for a couple of years and being somewhat removed from it, is just the conflict of trying to become more aware. I sort of became face to face with the realisation that I just had no idea what’s going on, or what I was doing.

Q: How is this related to 600 Bottles of Wine?

I mean, this might seem like a little bit of a stretch - but the ethos of 600 Bottles is an ethos that in-spires me, and that in my own way, I subscribe to with my work. 600B was essentially a DIY pro-ject - with a small team working purely on passion and dedication to the work. I’m very proud to be a part of it and so excited that it exists as a beacon for other people who might have similar desires or aspirations to express themselves or connect with an audience. I get so motivated when I see something that was fuelled by passion and dedication pay off. I think 600BOW is a great example of this.

Q: What's your drink of choice when creating music?

Coffee for sure, also water. Heeeeeaps Of water. I find if I drink alcohol when I’m writing - it’s very productive in the short term, but before long I’m just jamming on Frenzal covers.

Q: Favourite movie/TV series soundtrack & why?

Movie and TV soundtracks are gigantic parts of my life, and it’s very hard to pick one. I grew up on a steady diet of The Monkees and Rocky Horror - and they’ll always be noted by me as early influ-ences.
What stands out most as like a motivating factor to my work though, is when Cotton by The Moun-tain Goats was featured on the show Weeds. I have loved that band for a very long time and it was just a really beautiful example of how art from two different worlds can exist together so comforta-bly.
Also, in Scrubs where Collin Hay sung Overkill, which I think is on par with some of my favourite moments in any film or show.

Q: What is the best song to match with a bold red wine?

For me, The National are THE wine band. Their song All The Wine is a bit too easy to note as the best match wine song - but it is up there. I think my wine match song of choice is Pink Rabbits from their record Trouble Will Find Me.
